When necessary, these large black power resistors are automatically connected to the turbine to keep it loaded by producing heat. It is rarely used since excess power is normally fed to the utility grid and runs the meter backwards. The brown resistor at the bottom is a smaller load used to slow the turbine down under certain conditions. The entire operation is automatic. Steve@UPWallers.net
