Grammar: (30 min/3x/wk) In G.U.M, complete lessons 1, 2 & 3, sentence, subject and predicate. Copy a rule or definition on sheet of paper and put in Grammar Rules section. Complete exercises. When necessary, use a separate piece of paper. File in Grammar Exercises section. Play and sing the Sentence Song from the Grammar Songs CD. Watch Schoolhouse Rock DVD grammar section.

Writing: (30 min/day) Complete a couple of pages in Zaner-Bloser 4th Grade Handwriting workbook as needed for cursive practice.

Reading: (30 minutes/day) Read Horrible Histories: Who Are You Calling a Woolly Mammoth by Elizabeth Levy (560.97Le).

History & Geography: (2-3 hrs/week) Prehistory & People of the Ice Age, Migrating & Settling Down (up to 8,000 B.C.). Read 4 pages from Kingfisher Book of the Ancient World. Make a narration page  (outline or composition) for the history notebook. Mark dates on timeline. Complete project/activity.

History Activity: Weaving Basket out of cattails or coil clay pot or make a miniature mud brick house.

Math: (4hrs/wk) Work on Review Sections in Math-U-See Intermediate Math. Use the tests in the Teacher’s Manual to assess weak areas. Review Lesson 1: Multiply 1, 2, 5 and Lesson: 2 Fractions in Math-U-See Intermediate Math. Watch video and practice concepts using manipulatives. Complete multiplication problems. Practice multiplication facts and skip counting by 3 and 6, and by 9.

History & Geography: (2-3 hrs/week) First Farmers & First Cities (10,000-5,000 B.C.). Read 2 pages from Kingfisher Book of the Ancient World. Make a narration page  (outline or composition) for the history notebook. Mark dates on timeline.

History Activity:  Field trip to Field Museum

Math: (4hrs/wk) Review Lesson 3: Adding Fractions and Lesson 4: Equivalent Fractions, in Math-U-See Intermediate Math. Watch video and practice concepts using manipulatives. Develop a chart of liquid measurements for cups, pints, quarts, and gallons. Complete multiplication problems. Practice multiplication facts and skip counting.

Math Materials: quart of chocolate milk, Safari subtraction game,

Science: (2-3 hrs/wk) Read selections on bears from Guide to Animal Tracking and Behavior by the Stokes. Research and write a report on bears.

Science Activity: Take a hike and collect leaves from different tree species for a lead collection. Sort them into piles based on similar shapes. Select the best one from each.

Spelling: (15 min/day) Complete Lesson 3 in MCP’s Spelling Workout D. Copy rules and word facts and file along with frequently misspelled words.

Grammar: (30 min/3x/wk) In G.U.M, complete lessons 6 & 7, prepositional phrases, complete sentences. Copy a rule or definition on sheet of paper and put in Grammar Rules section. Complete exercises. When necessary, use a separate piece of paper. File in Grammar Exercises section. Play the Treasure Hunt game on page 31.

Writing: (30 min/day) Brainstorm and create a list of words which are any way related to trees (examples in If You’re Trying to Teach Kids How to Write…, pg. 55). Post the list and add to it as the week goes on. Work on completing Van Gogh poem. Complete a couple of pages in Zaner-Bloser 4th Grade Handwriting workbook as needed for cursive practice.

Reading: (30 minutes/day) Read Enheduana of Sumer in the Outrageous Women by Vicki Leon.

History & Geography: (2-3 hrs/week) Mesopatamia & Sumer & Babylon (5,000-1155 B.C.). Read 4 pages from Kingfisher History Encyclopedia. Make a narration page  (outline or composition) for the history notebook. Mark dates on timeline. Read How People Lived: City-States, pg. 14-17 and They Lived Like this in Ancient Mesopatamia by Neurath & Worboys (913.35Ne). Complete project/activity. Reference:  Empires of Mesopotamia by Don Nardo (935Na.

History Activity:  Create a miniature Mesopotamia River valley (pg. 31, Pyramids: 50 Hands-On Activities to Experience Ancient Egypt by Avery Hart and Paul Mantell (932 Ha) and make a Sumerian royal headdress from the Ancient Arts Jewelry kit.

Video: Ancient Civilizations for Children: Ancient Mesopotamia (935An video).

Math: (4hrs/wk) Skim through Lesson 27: Decimals in Math-U-See Intermediate Math. Watch video and practice concepts using manipulatives. Use the place value sheets for decimals. Play the Decimal Fractions game in Math for Fun, pg. 25, and the Diabolical Decimals game on pg. 44. Continue to practice multiplication facts  (especially 4s) and skip counting. Have Gentian locate an Egyptian book to read in the library.

Math Materials: Number line, place value sheets, cardboard, construction paper,  diabolical decimal chart, die, and pencil.

Science: (2-3 hrs/wk) What is a tree? Read pages 92-103 in 175 Amazing Nature Experiments by Harlow and Morgan and pages 54-57 in Reader’s Digest How Nature Works. Read My Mother Talks to Trees by Doris Gove. Make a definitions page for the science notebook (What We Read). Complete 1-2 activities or experiments.

Science Activity: Role play what it is to start as a seed, then anchor to the soil and grow, endure all that happens around since a trees can’t go anywhere. (refer to Steve Van Matre books for ideas). Select on special tree, give it a name, and record data about it (pg. 92 in 175 Amazing Nature Experiments by Harlow and Morgan).

Reading: (30 minutes/day) Read Tut’s Mummy Lost—and Found by Judy Donnelly  and The Tomb of the Boy King by John Frank (932 Fr).

History & Geography: (2-3 hrs/week) Egypt Old Kingdom (3100-2040 B.C.). Read 2 pages from Kingfisher Book of the Ancient World. Also read How People Lived: Secrets of the Tomb, pg. 22-23, Tales Mummies Tell by Patricia Lauber (393La), Secrets of Mummies by Joyce Milton (393 Mi), Mummies made in Egypt by Aliki (393 Br) and complete project/activity. Locate Egypt on the globe. Make a narration page  (outline or composition) for the history notebook. Mark dates on timeline. Complete project/activity.

History Activity: Complete activities in Ancient Egypt Treasure Chest, and do a self-portrait in the ancient Egyptian style and dress yourself in period clothing (pg. 51, Pyramids: 50 Hands-On Activities to Experience Ancient Egypt by Avery Hart and Paul Mantell (932 Ha). Experiment with Hieroglyphics stamp kit.

History Material: Paper or parchment, colored pencils and markers

Math: (30 min/day) Work on Lesson 5: Multiply 7 & 8, Inequalities, Gallon/Pints in Math-U-See Intermediate Math. Watch video and practice concepts using manipulatives. Complete multiplication problems. Practice multiplication facts and skip counting. Play the Fair Shares game in Math for Fun, pg. 40.

Math Materials: container and large noodles or dried beans

Science: (2-3 hrs/wk) What types of trees live around us? Read pages 92-93 in 175 Amazing Nature Experiments by Harlow and Morgan, pgs. 8-9 “Trees” in The Usbourne Illustrated Encyclopedia: The Natural World, and pages 54-57 in Reader’s Digest How Nature Works. Read The Life Cycle of the Oak Tree by Paula Z. Hogan and Why Do Leaves Change Color by Betsy Maestro. Make a definitions page for the science notebook (What We Read). Complete 1-2 activities or experiments.

Science Activity: Assemble the data on the special tree into a Tree Poster (pg. 92 in 175 Amazing Nature Experiments by Harlow and Morgan). Take a walk around to locate different types of trees. Make bark rubbings and collect leaves, flowers/seeds, twigs of the trees. Assemble them in a scrapbook and record the data-name, date, location, how old.

Grammar: (30 min/3x/wk) In G.U.M, complete lessons 10 & Proof, run-on sentences, proofreading. Copy a rule or definition on sheet of paper and put in Grammar Rules section. Complete exercises. When necessary, use a separate piece of paper. File in Grammar Exercises section.

Writing: (30 min/day) Complete a couple of pages in Zaner-Bloser 4th Grade Handwriting workbook as needed for cursive practice.

Reading: (30 minutes/day) Read Nefertari: Princess of Egypt by Roberta Angeletti and the Shipwrecked Sailor: An Egyptian Tale with Hieroglyphs by Tamara Bower.

History & Geography: (2-3 hrs/week) Egypt Middle Kingdom (2040-1550 B.C.). Read 2 pages from Kingfisher Book of the Ancient World, Secrets of the Mummies by Shelley Tanaka (393 Ta), and Pyramid by David Macaulay (913.32). Complete project/activity.

Video: Bill and Pete Go Down the Nile, Ancient Civilizations for Children: Ancient Egypt (935An jvideo), National Geographic  Egypt DVD.

History Activity: Create a six-step pyramid out of Legos (pg. 47, Pyramids: 50 Hands-On Activities to Experience Ancient Egypt by Avery Hart and Paul Mantell (932 Ha) and build their own tomb with shoeboxes. Consider putting in the boxes what they would want to take with them.

Math: (30 min/day) Work on Lesson 5: Multiply 7 & 8, Inequalities, Gallon/Pints in Math-U-See Intermediate Math. Watch video and practice concepts using manipulatives. Complete multiplication problems. Practice multiplication facts and skip counting. Play the Fair Shares game in Math for Fun, pg. 40.

Math Materials: container and large noodles or dried beans

Science: (2-3 hrs/wk) How do trees prepare for winter? Why Do Trees lose their leaves? Why leaves change color? What happens to all those leaves? To answer these questions, read pages 106-109 in 175 Amazing Nature Experiments by Harlow and Morgan. Make a definitions page for the science notebook (What We Read). Complete 1-2 activities or experiments.

Science Activity: Assemble a color wheel from pieces of different leaves or cross a leaf (experiment on pg. 108 in 175 Amazing Nature Experiments by Harlow and Morgan), or put leaves in a covered jar for four weeks and check regularly to see what happens (experiment on pg. 109 in 175 Amazing Nature Experiments by Harlow and Morgan).

Reading: (30 minutes/day) Read Cleopatra by Diane Stanley (932 St), The Tomb of the Boy King by John Frank (932 Fr), and Egypt’s Queen Cleopatra by Nobel Iris (921 Cl).

History & Geography: (2-3 hrs/week) Egypt’s New Kingdom (1532-30 B.C.): Read 2 pages from Kingfisher Book of the Ancient World. Make a narration page  on the “Superstars of Old Egypt” for the history notebook (see: Pyramids: 50 Hands-On Activities to Experience Ancient Egypt by Avery Hart and Paul Mantell (932 Ha). Mark dates on timeline. Have Gentian make a drawing. Read excerpts from Hatshepsut of Thebes from Outrageous Women and complete project/activity.

History Activity: Make clothing and jewelry that the kings and queens may have worn. Make a reed boat (pg. 44-45, Make it Work! Ancient Egypt by Andrew Haslam and Alexander Parsons). Make a pharaoh’s pectoral from the Ancient Arts Jewelry kit.

Math: (30 min/day) Work on Lesson 6: Build Double Digit Multiplication  in Math-U-See Intermediate Math. Watch video and practice concepts using manipulatives. Complete multiplication problems. Practice multiplication facts and skip counting. Play the Square Shuffling game in Math for Fun, pg. 180.

Math Materials: eight colored squares of equal size

Science: (2-3 hrs/wk) Read 2 pages, “Structure of fungi,” from How Nature Works. Write a short science report on one of the topics covered in the section. Complete project/activity and record results of any experiments.

Science Experiments: Grow a pin mold (from bread) and find out how useful by making bread with yeast

Reading: (30 minutes/day)

History & Geography: (2-3 hrs/week) Michigan government. Read Know your Marquette County Government: a citizens guide to Marquette County by the League of Women Voters.

History Activity:

Math: (30 min/day) Work on Lesson 21: Multiply Fractions in Math-U-See Intermediate Math and practice concepts using manipulatives. Review all other concepts from the previous lessons.

Math Materials:

Science: (2-3 hrs/wk) Read pages 74-75, “Freshwater animals of lake and streams” from How Nature Works. Write a short science report on one of the topics covered in the section. Complete project/activity and record results of any experiments.

Science Activity: Trap underwater nightlife on a lake and build your own pond to raise tadpoles and salamander larvae.
