Spelling: (10-15 min/day) Complete Lesson 16, Y as a Vowel, in MCP’s Spelling Workout B. Copy rules and file in Spelling Rules. File words frequently misspelled in Trouble Words.

Grammar: (15-20 min/day) In English for a Thoughtful Child, complete lessons 1 & 2, sentence and statements. Copy a rule or definition on sheet of paper and put in Grammar Rules section. Complete exercises. When necessary, use a separate piece of paper. File in Grammar Exercises section.

Writing: (5-10 minutes per day) Complete a couple of pages in Zaner-Bloser 2nd Grade Handwriting workbook.

Reading: (30 minutes per day) Take a trip to the library to select book/s to read for the week. Read Diane Stanley’s Cleopatra.

History and Geography: (2-3 hours per week) The Rise of Rome. Read two pages (86-87) from Usborne Book of World History. Make a narration page for the history notebook. Have Gentian make a drawing and color a map. Read How People Lived by Anne Millard and complete project/activity.

History Activity: Work on activities in Ancient Rome treasure chest or select an activity from Classical Kids: An Activity Guide in Ancient Greece and Rome by Laurie Carlson (938Ca).

Math: (REVIEW) Work on Lesson A: Place Value in Math-U-See Foundations. Watch video and practice concepts using manipulatives. Complete worksheets in Student Text. Read One Hundred is a Family by Pam Munoz Ryan and Cat Count by Betsy Lewin. Practice the concept of place value by doing “Fruity Places” activity from Cereal Math, pgs. 16-18. Roll dice or numbers cube and place cereal in proper column. Modify this activity to include giving the number and to having them put random number of cereal in place and read number.

Math Materials: Fruit Loops cereal, small paper cups, pipe cleaners, Styrofoam blocks, number cubes.

Science: Finish assembling the animal classification chart. Reread classifying book. Make a narration page for the science notebook (What We Read). Complete project/activity and one more narration page (What We Did).

History Activity: Read Roman Numerals I to MM by Arthur Glisert and Number Art by Leonard Fisher and learn how to read and write the Roman numerals on the grandfather clock.

Math: (REVIEW) Work on Lesson 1: Learning Unit Bars in Math-U-See Foundations. Watch video and practice concepts using manipulatives. Complete worksheets in Student Text. Practice adding numbers up to 9 by doing the “Nine in a Hive” game from File Folder Games for Math, pages 6-11.

Math Materials: Make copies of game and assemble

Science: Read “Rocks and Minerals” from How the Earth Works, pgs. 76-79. Make a narration page for the science notebook (What We Read). Complete project/activity and one more narration page (What We Did).

Science Activity: Locate as many minerals as we can find. Determine through experiments the difference between rock and mineral.

History Activity: Work on activities in Ancient Rome treasure chest.

Math: (REVIEW) Work on Lesson 2: Addition, +0, +1 and Lesson 3: Skip Count by 2 & Liquid Measure in Math-U-See Foundations. Watch video and practice concepts using manipulatives. Complete worksheets in Student Text. Practice the “1 Quart = 2 Pints” concept by searching for as many quart & pint combinations in the grocery store. Practice skip counting by 2s.

Science: Read “Fiery Rocks (Igneous)” from How the Earth Works, pgs. 80-81. Make a narration page for the science notebook (What We Read). Read Let’s Go Rock Collecting by Roma Gans and Be a Rock Hound by Martin L. Keen. Complete project/activity and one more narration page (What We Did).

Science activity: Take field trip to Presque Isle to collect rocks. Study black rocks and imagine lava flows. Also take a field trip to Midway Rental Road to view pillow basalt formations. Have girls make a sketch of the basalt and collect samples.

Grammar: (15-20 min/day) In English for a Thoughtful Child, complete lessons 7 & 8, commands & oral. Copy a rule or definition on sheet of paper and put in Grammar Rules section. Complete exercises. When necessary, use a separate piece of paper. File in Grammar Exercises section.

Writing: (5-10 minutes per day) Complete a couple of pages in Zaner-Bloser 2nd Grade Handwriting workbook. Dictate a short sentence from a book, correct mistakes, then have G. rewrite correctly. File in Writing dictation section.

History and Geography: (2-3 hours per week) The Byzantine Empire (Romans). Read two pages (92-93) from Usborne Book of World History. Make a narration page for the history notebook. Have Gentian make a drawing and color a map. Complete project/activity.

History Activity: Make a mosaic.

Math: (REVIEW) Work on Lesson 4: Solving for Unknown & Addition +2 in Math-U-See Foundations. Watch video and practice concepts using manipulatives. Complete worksheets in Student Text. Practice adding numbers up to 9 by doing the “Nine in a Hive” game from File Folder Games for Math, pages 6-11.

Math Materials: Make copies of game and assemble

Science: Read “Rocks Remade (Metamorphic)” from How the Earth Works, pgs. 82-83. Read Let’s Go Rock Collecting by Roma Gans. Make a narration page for the science notebook (What We Read). Complete project/activity and one more narration page (What We Did).

Science activity: Field trip to Carp River to collect hematite. Continue to collect, identifying and classifying rocks. Start rock candy. Selected an experiment in Gobble Up Science in which we made a sedimentary cheese sandwich then heated it for metamorphosis.

Have Gentian make a drawing and color a map. Read The Rise of Islam by John Child (297Ch) and selections from the Koran.

History Activity: Have a Ramadhan Feast or work on elephant craft.

Math: (REVIEW) Work on Lesson 5: Skip Count by 2 & Money 10 cents and Special Geometric Circles in Math-U-See Foundations. Watch video and practice concepts using manipulatives. Complete worksheets in Student Text. Practice the solving for skip counting by ?. Practice counting with dimes by doing hands-on activities.

Science: Read Beds and Joints (Sedimentary)” from How the Earth Works, pgs. 86-87. Make a narration page for the science notebook (What We Read). Also Read Is There a Dinosaur in Your Backyard? by Spencer Christian includes experiments and activities . Complete project/activity and one more narration page (What We Did).

Science activity: Field trip to jewelry store to look at minerals and gems. Take collected rocks and perform hardness test and acid test on them to begin to classify them.

Read the two pages on Charlemagne from Knights & Castles: 50 Hands-on Activities by Avery Hart (940.1Ha), selected pages from Charlemagne issue in Calliope magazine Mar. 1999 and How They Lived section on monasteries.

History Activity: Practice the Carolingian minuscule alphabet and experiment with how to keep a ceiling up (activities taken from Calliope).

Video: Knight’s Tale (rated PG-13)—a movie on the tournament life of a knight.

Math: (REVIEW) Work on Lesson 6: Addition +9 in Math-U-See Foundations. Watch video and practice concepts using manipulatives. Complete worksheets in Student Text. Practice adding numbers up to 18 by doing the “Apple Adding” game from File Folder Games for Math, pages 12-17.

Math Materials: Make copies of game and assemble

Science: Read Fossils from How the Earth Works, pgs. 88-89, Fossils Tell of Long Ago by Aliki and Digging Up Dinosaurs by Aliki. Make a narration page for the science notebook (What We Read). Complete project/activity and one more narration page (What We Did).

Science activity: From the experiment in How the Earth Works, Make a sedimentary rock out of layers of different colors of plaster mixed with sand and put a shell in it.
