Phonics: (3x/wk) In Phonics Pathways, work on K sounds (goal page 40-43). Have RiLee read and write as many words from each page. Play the duck-duck-goose game.

Reading: (30 minutes/day) Read Sunset of the Saber tooth by Mary Pope Osbourne.

Spelling: Complete Lesson 1 in MCP’s Spelling Workout A.

Writing: (30 min/day) Complete 5-6 pages in Zaner-Bloser 1st Grade Handwriting workbook per week.

History & Geography: (2-3 hrs/week) Digging up History: How archaeologists find out about the past &First Settlers (up to 8,000 B.C.). Read 4 pages from Usborne Book of World History. Make a narration page for the history notebook. Complete project/activity.

History Activity: Weaving Basket out of cattails or coil clay pot or make a miniature mud brick house.

Math: (30 min/day) (REVIEW) Work on Lesson 3: Skip Count by 2 & Liquid Measure, Lesson 4: Solving for Unknown & Addition +2 in Math-U-See Foundations, Lesson 5: Skip Count by 10 & Money 10 cents and Lesson 6: Addition +9. Watch video and practice concepts using manipulatives. Complete worksheets. Practice the “1 Quart = 2 Pints” concept by searching for as many quart & pint combinations in the grocery store. Practice skip counting by 2s, 10s and 5s. Practice skip counting by 10s starting on different numbers and backward counting from one ten to another. Practice adding numbers up to 18 by doing the “Apple Adding” game from File Folder Games for Math, pages 12-17.

History & Geography: (2-3 hrs/week) First Cities (8000-5,000B.C.). Read 2 pages from Usborne Book of World History. Make a narration page for the history notebook.

History Activity: Field trip to Field Museum

Math: (30 min/day) (REVIEW) Watch Lesson 7: Skip Count by 5 & Money 5 cents and Lesson 8: Addition +8 on Math-U-See Foundations video. Practice concepts using manipulatives. Complete worksheets in Student Text. Practice counting with nickels by doing hands-on activities. Weigh different fruit and determine how much they would cost at 5 cents per pound. Watch Math-U-See Foundations video. Practice adding numbers up to 18 by doing the “Apple Adding” game from File Folder Games for Math, pages 12-17. Read How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World by Marjorie Priceman and The Seasons of Arnold’s Apple Tree by Gail Gibbons. Dry apples and/or make apple tarts or popovers.

Math Materials: apples and other fruit of various weights, pie crust, nickels & dimes

Science: (2-3 hrs/wk) Research and write a report on bears.

Science Activity: Take a hike and collect leaves from different tree species for a leaf collection. Sort them into piles based on similar shapes. Select the best one from each.

Phonics: (3x/wk) In Phonics Pathways, work on four letter words with two consonant endings (page 46-56). Have RiLee read and write as many words from these pages. Play a game of jump rope.

Reading: (30 minutes/day) Read Enheduana of Sumer in the Outrageous Women by Vicki Leon.

Spelling: Complete Lessons 3 in MCP’s Spelling Workout A.

Writing: (30 min/day) Brainstorm and create a list of words which are any way related to trees (examples in If You’re Trying to Teach Kids How to Write…, pg. 55). Post the list and add to it as the week goes on. Complete 5-6 pages in Zaner-Bloser 1st Grade Handwriting workbook per week. Work on completing Van Gogh poem.

History & Geography: (2-3 hrs/week) Mesopotamia-Sumerians (5,000-2000 B.C.). Read 6 pages from Usborne Book of World History. Make a narration page for the history notebook. Have RiLee make a drawing. Read How People Lived: City-States, pg. 14-17 and complete project/activity.

Video: Ancient Civilizations for Children: Ancient Mesopotamia (935An jvideo).

History Activity: Create a miniature Mesopotamia River valley (pg. 31, Pyramids: 50 Hands-On Activities to Experience Ancient Egypt by Avery Hart and Paul Mantell (932 Ha) and make a Sumerian royal headdress from the Ancient Arts Jewelry kit.

Math: (30 min/day) Work on Lesson: Telling Time in Math-U-See Foundations. Practice concepts using manipulatives. Complete worksheets in Student Text. Practice telling time and +8 facts by doing hands-on activities.

Science: (2-3 hrs/wk) What is a tree? Read pages 92-103 in 175 Amazing Nature Experiments by Harlow and Morgan and pages 54-57 in Reader’s Digest How Nature Works. Read My Mother Talks to Trees by Doris Gove. Make a definitions page for the science notebook (What We Read). Complete 1-2 activities or experiments.

Science Activity:  Role play what it is to start as a seed, then anchor to the soil and grow, endure all that happens around since a trees can’t go anywhere. (refer to Steve Van Matre books for ideas). Select on special tree, give it a name, and record data about it (pg. 92 in 175 Amazing Nature Experiments by Harlow and Morgan).

Phonics: (3x/wk) In Phonics Pathways, work on “y” suffix with its common long “e” sound (pages 58-60). Have RiLee read and write as many words from the “Y” suffix review page as possible. (Maybe make and eat some candy.

Reading: (30 minutes/day) Have RiLee read Egyptian Gods and Goddesses by Henry Baker and M& M and the Mummymess by Pat Ross. Read Mummies in the Morning by Mary Pope Osbourne and I am the Mummy Heb-Nefert by Eve Bunting (Easy Reader).

Spelling: Complete Lessons 4 & 5 in MCP’s Spelling Workout A.

Writing: (30 min/day) Complete Van Gogh poem. Complete 5-6 pages in Zaner-Bloser 1st Grade Handwriting workbook per week.

History & Geography: (2-3 hrs/week) Egypt Old Kingdom (4000-2040 B.C.): First Settlers on the Nile & Farmers, Food and Drink, Tombs and Life After Death. Read six pages from Usborne Book of World History. Also read How People Lived: Secrets of the Tomb, pg. 22-23, Tales Mummies Tell by Patricia Lauber (393La), Secrets of Mummies by Joyce Milton (393 Mi), Mummies made in Egypt by Aliki (393 Br) and complete project/activity. Locate Egypt on the globe. Make a narration page for the history notebook. Complete project/activity.

History Activity: Complete activities in Ancient Egypt Treasure Chest, and do a self-portrait in the ancient Egyptian style and dress yourself in period clothing (pg. 51, Pyramids: 50 Hands-On Activities to Experience Ancient Egypt by Avery Hart and Paul Mantell (932 Ha). Experiment with Hieroglyphics stamp kit.

History Material: Paper or parchment, colored pencils and markers

Math: (30 min/day) Work on Lesson: Telling Time in Math-U-See Foundations. Practice concepts using manipulatives. Complete worksheets in Student Text. Practice telling time and +8 facts by doing hands-on activities.

Science: (2-3 hrs/wk) What types of trees live around us? Read pages 92-93 in 175 Amazing Nature Experiments by Harlow and Morgan, pgs. 8-9 “Trees” in The Usbourne Illustrated Encyclopedia: The Natural World, and pages 54-57 in Reader’s Digest How Nature Works. Read The Life Cycle of the Oak Tree by Paula Z. Hogan and Why Do Leaves Change Color by Betsy Maestro. Make a definitions page for the science notebook (What We Read). Complete 1-2 activities or experiments.

Science Activity: Assemble the data on the special tree into a Tree Poster (pg. 92 in 175 Amazing Nature Experiments by Harlow and Morgan). Take a walk around to locate different types of trees. Make bark rubbings and collect leaves, flowers/seeds, twigs of the trees. Assemble them in a scrapbook and record the data-name, date, location, how old.

Sound of the Week: (15 min/day) Twin Consonant Endings-ll, -ff, -ss, and -zz

Phonics: (3x/wk) In Phonics Pathways, work on twin consonant endings (page 61). Have RiLee read and write as many words from these pages. She should also read for fun Bumble Bear by James Hoffman.

Reading: (30 minutes/day) Read Tut’s Mummy Lost—and Found by Judy Donnelly, an Egyptian fairy tale (pg. 12-13, from the Ancient Egyptians Activity Book) and the legend The Egyptian Cinderella by Shirley Climo (398.2 Cl).

Spelling: Complete Lessons 6 & 7 in MCP’s Spelling Workout A.

Writing: (30 min/day) Complete 5-6 pages in Zaner-Bloser 1st Grade Handwriting workbook per week.

History & Geography: (2-3 hrs/week) Egypt Middle Kingdom (2040-1500 B.C.): Building Pyramids and sport & Leisure. Read four pages from Usborne Book of World History and read How People Lived: on the Nile, pages 18-21. Make a narration page for the history notebook. Have RiLee make a drawing. Complete project/activity.

Video: Bill and Pete Go Down the Nile, Ancient Civilizations for Children: Ancient Egypt (935An jvideo), National Geographic  Egypt DVD, and National Geographic’s Amazing Planet: Mummies Unwrapped.

History Activity: Create a six-step pyramid out of Legos (pg. 47, Pyramids: 50 Hands-On Activities to Experience Ancient Egypt by Avery Hart and Paul Mantell (932 Ha) and build their own tomb with shoeboxes. Consider putting in the boxes what they would want to take with them.

Math: (30 min/day) Watch Lesson 9: Skip Count by 3 on Math-U-See Foundations video. Practice concepts using manipulatives. Complete worksheets in Student Text. Practice skip counting and +8 facts by doing hands-on activities.

Science: (2-3 hrs/wk) How do trees prepare for winter? Why Do Trees lose their leaves? Why leaves change color? What happens to all those leaves? To answer these questions, read pages 106-109 in 175 Amazing Nature Experiments by Harlow and Morgan. Make a definitions page for the science notebook (What We Read). Complete 1-2 activities or experiments.

Science Activity: Assemble a color wheel from pieces of different leaves or cross a leaf (experiment on pg. 108 in 175 Amazing Nature Experiments by Harlow and Morgan), or put leaves in a covered jar for four weeks and check regularly to see what happens (experiment on pg. 109 in 175 Amazing Nature Experiments by Harlow and Morgan).

Phonics: (3x/wk) In Phonics Pathways, work on -sh and -th with two consonant endings (pages 63-65). Have RiLee read and write as many words from the review page. Have the girls write down a wish.

Reading: (30 minutes/day) Read Cleopatra by Diane Stanley (932 St) and Egypt’s Queen Cleopatra by Nobel Iris (921 Cl).

Spelling: Complete Lessons 8 & 9 in MCP’s Spelling Workout A.

Writing: (30 min/day) Complete 5-6 pages in Zaner-Bloser 1st Grade Handwriting workbook per week.

History & Geography: (2-3 hrs/week) Egypt’s New Kingdom (1532-30 B.C.): Read five pages from Usborne Book of World History. Make a narration page for the history notebook. Have RiLee make a drawing. Read excerpts from Hatshepsut of Thebes from Outrageous Women and complete project/activity.

History Activity: Make clothing and jewelry that the kings and queens may have worn. Make a reed boat (pg. 44-45, Make it Work! Ancient Egypt by Andrew Haslam and Alexander Parsons). Make a pharaoh’s pectoral from the Ancient Arts Jewelry kit.

Math: (30 min/day) Watch Lesson 10: Addition of Doubles and Measurement (3’= 1 yard) on Math-U-See Foundations video. Practice concepts using manipulatives. Complete worksheets in Student Text. Practice skip counting by 3s and addition of doubles by doing hands-on activities.

Science: (2-3 hrs/wk) Is Fungi a type of plant? Read  2 pages, “Mushrooms, Toadstools and other Fungi,” from Usborne Illustrated Encyclopedia of the Natural World. Make a narration page for the science notebook.

Science Activity: Grow a pin mold (from bread) and find out how useful by making bread with yeast.
